Deng Xiaoping: there's a report that Jiang Zemin and Li Peng have returned to Beijing because of Deng's ailing health. Ethnic problems: a China Times article puts the recent Uighur uprising into broader perspective, describing it as one of many uprising by ethnic groups to 'resist Chinese rule' in recent 'decades'.
Hong Kong: Beijing will have to approve the list of top officials who will head the SAR government.
Also in today's news about the Territory: property prices are expected to rise higher along new routes proposed by the Mass Transit Railway Corp. for extending services in Kowloon and Hong Kong.
Korea: as Beijing mulls over its options about the recent defection of a senior North Korean official, it continues to prepare for a possible flood of immigrants along the the Sino-Korean border . Such preparations have been on-going for many months and include the establishment of holding camps.
