November 20, 1997
Washington DC -- Congressman Curt Weldon (R, PA), who represents portions of Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery Counties, today announced the launch of a major new effort to bolster U.S.-China Relations in the Philadelphia region.
Realizing the importance of establishing stronger relations between the United States and China, Weldon has launched an effort to enhance and elevate the level of mutual understanding and respect between our two nations. This effort will culminate with a major Conference on United States-China Relations to be held in the Philadelphia region in the Spring of 1998.
As part of this initiative, it is planned to establish a China Study Center at one of the region's institutions of higher learning. This center would provide solid support for ongoing activities in the Greater Philadelphia area through various exchange programs. It is hoped that this effort and the spring conference will serve as a national model for similar programs throughout the country.
The effort has received strong support from "The Committee of 100", a group of prominent Chinese American citizens who have achieved positions of leadership in the United States in a broad range of professions. A steering committee for the conference, chaired by Congressman Weldon and comprising of leaders from industry, academia, government and civic bodies in the Greater Philadelphia Region, has been formed and held its first meeting in early October.
Key regional corporations and educational institutions that have been actively involved in the effort are Smithkline Beecham, Inc.(Philadelphia, PA), Betz Dearborn Inc. (Trevose, PA), Rohm and Haas Inc. (Philadelphia, PA), and Drexel University.
